INDIES
The Crow by James O'Barr
A story that encapsulates the author's own loss and creates a brooding persona of violence. The Crow is an awesome story that stands as one of my favorite Indie comics to ever do it, the overwhelming sadness that consumes Eric Draven is beautiful. The way it's posed (at least in the collection I read) is a non-linear revenge interwoven with memories of his past and the looming distraught he deals with in the present in these dream-like sequences. It's a different ride from the movie that was inspired from the comic, there is no big bad guy or anything like that. Just a void of what was left of his love.
Laika's Comet by Fourleafclover
Laika's Comet is such a delight to read, from the vibrant colors to the engaging character writing. Laika herself is such a bubbly and fun character and you love seeing her. I think if you haven't read a lot of webcomics, you should absolutely start here.
Arcade Kings
Taka
Killjoys: National Anthem
Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley
Okay so Scott Pilgrim is one of the first graphic novels I sunk my teeth into, I was a fan of the movie and then I read the comics. If you haven't read it before it's a story about Scott Pilgrim, 23 year old living in Toronto and being a smug piece of shit. Scott Pilgrim's an asshole but that's probably the best part about this book is you get to see the journey and all the crazy shit that happens, along with that the author puts a lot of love into the locations of Toronto and that's something I think is really cool.
